Dew Tour: Ocean City, Maryland

Posted August 16, 2013 @ 9:59am | by Steve Andrews

I am very fortunate to have a part time job with the Dew Tour helping out with the media production side of things, which is pretty sweet. Ultimately, this job allows me to be in some of the sweetest spots to watch the best skaters and BMX bikers in the world for the 4day event…all occurring on one of the best known beaches on the East Coast, Ocean City, MD.

I'm pretty much like a Lite version of a Production Assistant. Less technical and more of a helping pair of hands for the camera guys and their very expensive, very heavy, very badass looking camera equipment.

Most of the time, the pressure was on me to keep sand (the enemy) away from anything camera related which was pretty much everything I was handed and trusted to hold. Or in this case, protecting the camera from interested seagulls looking to land for their next bathroom stop and ruining this time-lapse of the boardwalk.

The BMX Park course and Vert ramp, and an epic spot of the halfpipe...

Bucky Lasek has been on a Vert ramp tear this year winning every major skate vert comp. Including this one.  His mom was quite happy, too.

BMX guys were sending huge airs.  A few looking up, standing just off the flat bottom of the halfpipe...

My favorite pics came from the Skate Legends comp. 50 year old Steve Alba working up the crowd before dropping in. Classic Steve Caballero style on this frontside rock n' roll board slide around the corner.

Two big concerts went down that weekend on the beach…Talib Kweli and Krewella.  About as close to the stage without actually being on it. I had some space behind me with security protecting us from the craziness beyond the crowd barrier. The Super Moon above naturally spotlighting the raging crowd.

During the day the concert stage got completely cleaned off for the Flatland comp.  The technical level of flatland riding continues to progress to levels people didn't see coming... The Skate Bowl final was probably the best comp of the whole weekend. Pedro Barros lofting a massive 540 in the deep end of the bowl.

There is such a variety of styles and a huge age difference but all a lot of fun to watch, especially this close up. 13 year old Tom Schaar tweaking out a stalefish.  15 year old Kilani David sending a huge frontside air. And 40 year old (almost Legend) Andy Macdonald.
