Center Mounting Skis

Posted June 24, 2010 @ 1:53pm | by George Michaelsen

If you take a look at your typical all-mountain ski, there is more ski in front of the binding than there is behind it.  The more ski you have in front of the the binding the more stable it will be, when moving forwards.  If you want your skis to be more stable when skiing switch you would move the binding closer to the center of the ski.

What you lose on a center mounted ski.

  • Less stability when skiing forwards
  • Less floatation in soft snow or powder
  • Less acceleration/power coming out of turns
  • Less all-mountain versatility

What you gain on a center mounted ski.

  • Easier to balance and lock on to rails
  • More stability riding/landing switch
  • Easier spin rotation

Deciding the best mounting point on your skis depends on what you are going to be using those skis for.  If it's your only pair of skis and you love shredding the park, ripping corduroy, and fresh tracks in deep snow; you might want to keep your skis mounted closer to factory recommendations maybe only mounting forward 1cm or 2cm maximum.

Or.....

Just buy a Marker Schizo Binding:

Marker Schizo Binding Technology

The Marker Schizo binding has 6cm of adjustment, so if you have one ski and want to do it all, this is the binding for you.
