For intermediates or lighter weight experts that want performance and a walk mode you can do it pretty effectively with one pair of boots -- the Lange XT 100.  Based off the the RS wide shell the XT 100 provides skiers with awesome on trail performance Lange loyalists have come to expect with a liner that's more comfortable for hikes or short skins to some fun backcountry.  The XT-100 is an alpine boot first and a hiking boot second, it's not heavy but you wouldn't call it light either - if you're in average skier shape doing less than an hour long hike, you'll be fine and dandy.

Forward Flex / Boot Fit

The boot is rated at a 100 but flexes slightly softer than most other 100 flex boots due to the hike/walk mode.  (In general walk modes make boots softer because of the material removed from the spine of the boot.) The XT-100 is a great boot for lighter weight skiers or people that just a want a more forgiving forward flex.  The shell is identical to the XT-130 the mack daddy of em all.  A lower density liner provides skiers with a more comfortable fit a.k.a a plusher feel.

Liner

Thermo Fit RL1 - A lightweight liner that fits well out of the box and better when heat is applied.  This is the lowest density liner in the XT line up so it will be leaning towards the comfort side as opposed to performance side of things.
