A legendary ski that's been rebuilt in the last few years for more versatility and renamed for more clout.
The Mantra 88 is a new name, not a new ski. Volkl decided to do away with the Kendo name and introduce the 88mm waisted ski to the Mantra heritage. The Volkl Mantra 88 comes to the scene this season with no construction updates compared to last season's Volkl Kendo -- that's not a bad thing. The Volkl Kendo 88 had cemented itself into the all-mountain frontside-focused hall of fame years ago, why mess with a good thing? It's immensely powerful, damp, stable, and grips like no other. All of these things combine to give an expert skier, or more aggressive skiing intermediates a high-performance feel. The Mantra 88 loves to spend time on groomers with the occasional dabbling off-trail if the snow is good. When on groomers the Mantra could care less what the conditions are, groomers are where this ski comes to life. The Mantra 88 isn't the easiest ski to drive all day and there are skis out there that feel more energetic, but if you want that true "Volkl" feel and love to rip groomers, the Mantra 88 is a solid option.
Who is this ski for? Skiers who love a solid, quiet, damp powerful feel. This ski is optimized to ski groomers and will reward skiers who drive a little harder.
Who isn't this ski for? Skiers who want an easygoing ski for casually cruising, there are easier skis out there. Skiers who spend a fair amount of time off trail or in softer deeper snow.
M7 Mantra vs Mantra 88, which one should I choose? The M7 is a more powerful, demanding ski that will blast through crud better and offer versatility across more terrain. The Mantra 88 crushes groomers better, carves a nicer turn, is more nimble underfoot, and is easier to balance on.

The Mantra is one of the best options for groomer skiing. It's just well-rounded enough to dabble with some other types of terrain, but groomers are its domain. If you don't mind putting in a little more work for unmatched grip and power, this ski is built for you my friend.
