K2 Mindbender 88 Skis 2027

$799.95

The Mindbender 88 delivers the grip and precision of a frontside ski but with far more freedom and personality than most metal-laminate skis in the category. Think of it as a narrower, quicker version of the 101 rather than a narrower 96.

Quick. Quiet. Capable.

The Mindbender 88 might be the biggest surprise in the entire collection.

Historically, skis in this category tend to fall into one of two camps. They're either frontside-oriented carvers that reluctantly venture off trail, or they're watered-down all-mountain skis that lose some of the precision you'd expect from an 88 mm platform. The Mindbender 88 somehow manages to avoid both traps.

What's interesting is that while you'd expect this ski to simply feel like a narrower Mindbender 96, that's not really the case. In fact, we found the 88 shares more DNA with the Mindbender 101 and even the 111 than it does with the 96. The 96 feels like the balanced, middle child of the collection, while the 88 carries more of the freeride attitude found in its wider siblings.

That's immediately apparent on snow.

The Mindbender 88 has a surprising amount of grip and confidence when conditions firm up. Lay it over on edge and it'll happily carve trenches with the best skis in its category. The edge hold is strong, the power transmission is excellent, and the ski feels remarkably calm at speed.

But unlike a lot of dual-metal skis in the high-80 mm category, it doesn't feel locked into that experience.

The moment you want to release the tails, feather a turn, make a quick direction change, or smear your way through tighter terrain, the ski willingly follows along. That's what separates it from many of its competitors. Most skis this damp and powerful want to stay on edge all day. The Mindbender 88 is perfectly happy carving one turn and slashing the next.

Much of that personality comes from the redesigned construction.

Like the rest of the collection, the 88 utilizes an aspen and paulownia core paired with a Titanal I-Beam construction and K2's new Dark Matter Damping technology. By strategically placing weighted damping material where vibrations naturally occur, K2 created one of the quietest skis we've tested in this width category.

And unlike a lot of damping technologies that sound great on paper, Dark Matter is something you can actually feel.

The ski is incredibly smooth on firm snow. Chatter is minimized, rough terrain gets muted, and the overall ride quality feels much more refined than you'd expect from a ski that's also this energetic and quick. It allows the ski to feel lighter on your feet without sacrificing composure when speeds increase.

In bumps, trees, and tighter terrain, the Mindbender 88 really shines. It's quick edge-to-edge, easy to maneuver, and happy making short-radius turns all day long. Yet when the trail opens up, you can absolutely step on the gas. The ski remains calm, composed, and trustworthy even when conditions become firm enough to expose weaknesses in lesser skis.

For skiers who spend most of their days on groomers but refuse to stay there, the Mindbender 88 hits a sweet spot. It offers the precision and edge grip you'd expect from an 88 mm ski while maintaining the playful, versatile personality that makes the wider Mindbenders so much fun.

The result is a ski that feels equally comfortable carving morning corduroy, dancing through bumps after lunch, and sneaking into trees whenever conditions allow.

That's a rare combination.

Who is this for? East Coast and Midwest skiers looking for a premium daily driver.
Who is this not for? Western skiers who spend most days off trail in softer snow.
