The Salomon Alpha C BOA 130 is a completely different boot from the previous Alpha, even though the internal fit stays essentially the same. If you liked how the old Alpha fit your foot, that part is still here. What’s changed is how the boot skis, and the difference is immediately noticeable.

The biggest thing you feel is how quickly the boot transfers energy into the ski. The second you move forward into the tongue, pressure goes straight into the shovel. The same thing happens laterally. As soon as you start rolling your foot, ankle, and knee into the turn, the ski starts engaging. There’s almost no delay between what you’re asking the boot to do and what happens at the ski.

A lot of that comes from Salomon’s new ExoDrive construction and PowerLink design. Visually, one of the biggest clues is on the medial side of the shell, where there’s no traditional rivet near the ankle. That construction gives the boot a much more direct connection between the lower shell and cuff while thicker shell walls add torsional strength. The result is a boot that feels extremely precise fore/aft and laterally without feeling harsh or dead.

What impressed me most is that Salomon managed to combine all that directness with really nice suspension. The flex is powerful and immediate, but it doesn’t feel abrupt. There’s rebound when you load the boot and enough give through rough terrain that it never feels like you’re getting bounced around. It’s an incredibly intuitive flex pattern for a 130.

Salomon also combines the third-overlap shell design, lower buckle placement, and cuff BOA to get a really even wrap around the foot and lower leg. The cuff BOA is one of the easier versions we’ve used, and it does a nice job distributing pressure without needing to crank it down excessively.

Fit-wise, anyone familiar with the previous Alpha should feel right at home. The liner still has the plush, comfortable feel Salomon is known for, the boot is surprisingly easy to get on and off for something this powerful, and Custom Shell technology makes the shell straightforward to customize when needed.

The Alpha C BOA 130 is for strong skiers who want a boot that reacts immediately to every movement but still has some suspension and life to it. The fit may be familiar, but everything about the way this boot transfers energy to the ski feels new.
