It wasn't broke, the XMax 120 I mean -- but they fixed it.  The S/Max 120 is maybe the best 120 flex boot at 98 mm you'll ever put on, if you're into precise fitting boots that are surprisingly comfortable for being so locked in, that is.  The S/Max moves away from the twin frame design that put the previous X series on the map. While the shell has changed, the stronger construction makes the boots a bit more responsive, without sacrificing fit. Fit and performance are right where you want it to be with the new S/Max boot, Salomon nailed it.
