For skiers that love the ascent as well as the speed and exhilaration of skiing down, the Salomon MTN Lab is a solid choice – if the shoe fits of course.  If you have tried on the Salomon X Max 100, 120 or 130, the MTN lab is very similar, in fact it’s based off it.  Biggest difference fit wise, is the volume, there is more room for the instep which can be a problem for people in the X Max series.  If you like the way other Salomon ski boots ski, you will not be disappointed in the MTN Lab’s downhill performance.  We found the MTN lab to be more precise feeling than many other alpine touring boots, very similar to an alpine boot but just not the same rebound, feels a little more damp giving it a softer feel.

The MTN Lab’s are really light, they grip really well scrambling on rocks, the liner doesn’t pinch your achilles when the cuff swings backwards and they’re easy to use – always a plus.  The liners are heat moldable just like the rest of the Salomon ski boots, just not the same quick moldablity that the other shells have, however the MTN Lab’s Grilamid shell is great to work on – holds a punch really well.   All in all the boot is a solid option for those only doing backcountry and those looking for a boot to use at the resort as well.  It is a nu-all-mountain ski boot.
