Dynafit Beast 16 Ski Bindings 2017

Dynafit Beast 16 Ski Bindings 2017

ZERO COMPROMISE

The Dynafit Beast 16 is the only DIN certified tech binding on the market today that goes up that high. It was also the first tech binding to be awarded the TUV certification. In order to to achieve this level of binding retention, Dynafit engineers have created one seriously beefed up piece of ski equipment. The toe piece rotates on a turn table helping to eliminate pre-release caused by sudden impacts, and the toe is also secured to the ski with six screws instead of the typical four. The heel piece is mounted on rails that slide back and forth to accommodate a large amount of ski flex. The rear pins are much bigger than other pins on the market and they are unique because they can pivot individually.

The Beast 16 does not ski like a tech binding at all. You can feel super confident ripping around the resort on this thing. Of all the frameless tech bindings on the market today, the Beast and the Marker Kingpin feel the most secure on the down. If you are considering longer tours that include some overnights, the Beast beats the Kingpin. In order to switch from ski to hike, the Kingpin heel has to slide and ice can become a problem. The Beast walk mode is less likely to ice up thanks to the clever hike mode setting that covers the rear pins. Since the walk mode does not slide the heel out of the way, there is no true flat touring setting on this binding. If your boot has good range of motion, you are less likely to be bothered by this.

Note: In order to click into a Beast binding, you will need to install the included Beast clips. If you have any questions about boot compatibility, feel free to contact us.

Toe

The Beast 16 does not compromise one bit on performance and the retention factor is high with this tech toe piece. As a result, it is not quite as user friendly as the other toe pieces in the line up like the Radical FT 2.0. Stepping in and getting out are just as easy but it can be slightly more difficult to switch from ski to hike mode. The lockout function for hiking is bomb proof as a result.

Rotation Toe Piece - The entire beefy toe piece of the Beast 16 is mounted on a plate that allows it to rotate 5mm in both directions. The patent pending mechanism helps out big time when it comes to preventing pre-releases caused by sudden impacts.

Step In Side Towers - Attached to the rotation toe piece, directly under each of the toe pins, you will find the step in side towers. These handy metal studs help guide your boot into the correct place for easy step in.

Heel

The heel piece of the Beast 16 may just have better elastic travel and retention than your trusty Marker Griffon. Most pin bindings are lacking in the ability to push the heel of your boot down toward the ski like a traditional alpine binding does. The Beast and the Kingpin are the exception to that rule. As you step into the heel of the binding, a claw like lever engages on the heel as a second line of defense against upward release. This tech heel requires beast clips on your AT boots to increase vertical retention.

Climbing/Touring Aid

The beefy beast heel piece does not spin out of the way like the radical series of bindings do. In order to pin the brake out of the way for touring, you have to engage the first climbing aid. By engaging the first aid, you are effectively covering the pins of the heel piece and raising your heel up a bit. When conditions get steep you can flip forward climbing aid number two to increase the ramp angle. The beast does not have a truly flat setting like some of the other frameless bindings on the market.

Materials

Forged 7075 Aluminum, Chromoly, High-Strength Synthetic Material, Stainless Steel.

Hike To Ski Adjustment

With a little practice, you will be able to switch this binding from hike to ski and back again using only your pole grip. Begin your tour with the binding brakes pinned. You can complete this by flipping down the first climbing aid and locking it into place. Line up the tech toe inserts in your touring boot with the binding toe pins on the Beast and step down. Once engaged you pull the front lever up to lock the toe piece into hike mode and now you are ready for the skin up. At the top, reach back with your pole grip and pull up on the first hike aid engaging the brake. After that step down with your heel and you are ready to ski.
